I remained frozen in place, leaning against the back of my door. My heart pounded, and it felt like the kiss with Jack was an out-of-body experience. Slowly, I started piecing together what had just happened. But how could I allow myself to get this far with Jack, allow myself to fall for him?

My stomach churned with uneasiness when I heard something coming from Scarlett’s room. Then, I realized what it was. Scarlett’s wailing cries. I didn’t even think as I lunged inside to see her surrounded by used tissues and chocolate wrappers. Had she found my stash?

This only meant one thing—Jack Turner.

I rushed to sit beside her body, which was sprawled along the length of the bed. I moved the hair stuck to her tear-stained cheeks and dabbed her runny nose with the last tissue in the box she held.

“What’s wrong, Scar? Talk to me.” I placed my black-and-gold clutch purse on her nightstand.

She exploded into another wailing sob, trying to speak. I couldn’t understand a word.

“What can I get you? Water, wine?” I asked.

“I don’t need more wine,” she said, sounding congested. “That won’t fix my broken heart. I found the good stuff you hid in the bathroom cupboard.”

“I was saving that for a special occasion,” I said, trying to be funny or to hide the guilt off my face.

I’d kissed Jack Turner, and I’d liked it. I was a horrible, horrible friend.

“They’re stale,” she groaned, pointing to the half-empty box of chocolate.

“And you ate them anyway?” This was bad, and it was all my fault. “Sit up,” I said, pushing against her dead weight as I squeezed my way onto the bed. I swatted away tissues as her head fell into my lap. I started stroking her hair. “Is it Jack?” I gulped.

“Don’t even say his name!” she squealed, and her high pitch made my hair stand on end.

“What did Jack do?”

Questions swirled through my mind, wondering if he’d told her about the kiss. No, he wouldn’t. There wouldn’t have been time for him to call her when he dropped me off and me to make it up to our apartment. With the amount of tissues and the alcohol consumed, it couldn’t have happened that quickly.

“Scar, talk to me. What did he do?”

“He called me,” she whimpered. “Before his poker night started … he called and told me that I should stop calling him and leaving him messages. That he’s sorry that he didn’t make it clear enough that there’s nothing between us.”

She wailed again, and I rocked her head. Jack must have sneaked away to call her after we talked in the kitchen when I told him to make things clear with Scarlett. But I hadn’t thought he was going to do this tonight.

“Shh, shh, it’s okay,” I said nervously.

I knew she would be angry with me once she found out the truth, but then again, I should be upset. Why had she lied, making me believe that they were an item when they weren’t? Wait
